Midwifery Services
Access to my midwifery services begins with an initial consultation. Your initial visit will require approximately two hours time. At this time we will discuss you birth history and go over any concerns or questions you may have. You will receive information about our home birth support group and Birth Works childbirth preparation. The initial consultation is free of charge.
Routine prenatal visits will take place once every month through your eighth month. Fathers, siblings, family and friends are always welcome at all prenatal visits. They are encouraged to participate in your home birth plans. Subsequent visits will be scheduled for your 36th week, 38th week, 40th week and weekly thereafter until the birth of your baby. Your prenatal visits will provide you with the opportunity to ask questions, learn more about your baby and your body and will prepare you for a natural birth at home.
You will be continually monitored throughout your pregnancy for any signs or symptoms that may lead to pregnancy complications, such as high blood pressure, protein in the urine or any other complication that may make home birth unadvisable.
Once your labor begins, you will have continuous labor support, as you desire. You will be encouraged to eat and drink. You may move about as you please during your labor. Walking is encouraged. You may assume any position that you find comfortable. You may shower and bathe to sooth the pains of labor. There will be no time limits placed on your labor progression.
If you desire a water birth a inflatable birthing pool is provided, free of charge. Laboring and giving birth in the water is a very positive experience, providing a gentle birth for both mother and baby.
When you begin to push, you may give birth to your baby in any comfortale position, such as a supported squat, hands and knees or in the water. Perineal support and massage will be used during the pushing stage to allow the tissues to stretch without tearing. The umbilical cord will not be cut until it stops pulsating. There will be no separation of mother and baby. The baby will be placed immediately on your chest to hold, nurse and breastfeed.
Home birth with a midwife in attendance is superior to hospital birth in many ways. You have continunity of care throughout your labor, birth and postpartum period. you have complete control over your labor and birth. You will have no interventions and receive no harmful medications. Upon birth, your baby will never leave your side. You will allowed immediate and uninterrupted bonding. Midwifery care is so valuable, yet so affordable, when compared with routine hospital delivery charges.
